Reflecting on 40 years of Title IX

Prior to the 1970s, sports for women were not common. That all changed with the passage of Title IX on June 23, 1972. Signed into law by President Richard M. Nixon, Title IX promoted gender equity in all educational programs and is largely responsible for women’s entry into most every profession that was once the exclusive domain of men. In an op-ed for The Greenville News, Furman health sciences professor Bill Pierce reflects on the changes of the last 40 years.
